Kindergarten and First Grade Literacy Tutors

For the FY2016 school year, Alexandria Tutoring Consortium is teaming up with Volunteer Alexandria to recruit enough volunteers so that 125 ACPS kindergarten and first graders have a tutor for this school year. 

The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium's (ATC) mission is to provide the foundation for future learning success by helping to ensure children in the Alexandria City Public Schools can read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. ATC and Volunteer Alexandria are teaming up to recruit enough volunteers to spend one hour a week tutoring 125 in-need Alexandria kindergarten and first graders. ATC volunteers choose the ACPS school at which they would like to tutor and are paired with a kindergarten or first-grade student who does not have the literacy skills needed to learn to read at grade level. Through individualized lesson plans, materials, and guidance, volunteers work with their student during the school day, from October through May. Volunteers typically work with the student for 30 minutes twice a week.

We are challenging Alexandria to step up and commit to helping ensure Alexandria’s children are reading at grade level by third grade! Each volunteer is also required to undergo a background check through ACPS.
