Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria

Each year, Volunteer Alexandria recognizes and honors the work of volunteers and businesses that support Alexandria's nonprofit organizations and community. Volunteers give vital assistance in fulfilling our mission, and we couldn't do what we do without the help of those who donate their time, talents, and skills.

Food4ALX Community Food Drive

Volunteer Alexandria mobilizes the community each summer to collect 40,000 pounds of food to stock our local food pantries and food bank, ALIVE!. Summer is an especially challenging time for families facing hunger. Food donations typically decline, yet the need remains high, particularly for households with children who lose access to free or reduced-price school meals during summer break. Working together with businesses, congregations, scout groups, and more, host sites display collection bins and teams of volunteers transport donations.  The goal is to feed 2,500 families and with the community's support we can make it happen.

Annual Community Toy Drive

The toy drive takes place in partnership with the City of Alexandria’s Fund for Alexandria’s Child and invites the community to help collect toys, games, and books for families in need. Businesses, congregations, condominiums and apartment buildings, schools, DASH Bus, and individuals organize holiday parties and toy collections, and ask friends, family members, and customers to pitch in. After the collection is complete, thousands of toys are sorted into age categories and counted in preparation for the big day. Volunteer “shopping assistants” aid parents and guardians in selecting gifts for each child in their family, while little ones are entertained with craft projects. The spirit of the holiday season is evident during this annual event.

Old Town Arts & Crafts Fair

The fair takes place annually and attracts thousands of people to shop and browse from the 80+ vendors who set up their booths at Market Square or in the Waterfront Park in June.
