ACPS Bike Buddies Program

Come spread some joy when you volunteer as a Bike Buddy!

ACPS is seeking volunteers to assist with our Bicycling in the Schools (BITS) program at the elementary and middle school level. BITS is a PE unit where students learn to ride, learn about bike safety, and even take off-campus rides. BITS is implemented for every third grader across the district, giving all students, no matter their background, environment, or resources, an opportunity to learn how to ride a bike. BITS is also part of the secondary PE curriculum and occasionally Bike Buddies would support here as needed.

The Bike Buddy would assist the PE teacher with bike set-up and clean-up, helmet fittings, bike safety checks, and the best part, working directly with beginner riders.  There would always be a PE teacher present during instruction.  Volunteer slots are typically an hour in length.  The exact time and locations vary depending on school sites and PE schedules. General physical movement is a feature in this volunteer opportunity with lifting bikes and pushing them with children. PE is just about every kid's favorite class and being a Bike Buddy will be a fun and rewarding experience!

In the words of ACPS Bike Buddy Eldon Boes, “There is nothing quite like the children learning to balance and ride for the first time and those triumphant grins and supportive cheers amongst classmates as they take off”
