Children support the fight against hunger by making sandwiches

We invite children between 6 and 12 years old to join our effort by making peanut butter/jelly sandwiches.

Alexandria is one of the wealthiest parts of the United States, but an estimated 20% of Alexandrians can’t make ends meet. A report published in 2014 showed that 29,000 Alexandrians live near or below the official poverty threshold of $22,113 per year for a family with two adults and two children (2010). This means that many people can’t afford to put food on the table.

Volunteer Alexandria and Great Harvest Bread Company Megan Hurst have pledged their time to support the fight against hunger.

Children will prepare the sandwiches using gloves, assemble them and package them in sandwich bags. Due to space, we ask that parents wait in the main area.

Volunteer Alexandria will be managing this project and instruct the children as well as talk about volunteerism, giving and hunger. Bread, bags and peanut butter are donated by Great Harvest Bread.

Please note, this project involves working with nuts and wheat products!
