Memorial tree grove planting event

VTV is the non-profit created by families and survivors of the tragedy at Virginia Tech where, on April 16, 2007, a lone gunman killed 32 students and faculty, injured 24, and traumatized many, many more.

In a PARKnership with the City and a team of Virginia Tech Landscape Architecture program students, who are baaed in Old Town, we are planting a memorial tree grove in Chinquapin Park at 1pm on Sunday, April 29.  It will honor the victims and the survivors.

The event will begin with comments from Mayor Allison Silberberg, VT Assoc. Prof. Nate Heavers, VTV President Joe Samaha and VA State Delegate Chris Hurst, who lost his girlfriend to a gunman while she was reporting live on air for a Roanoke news station, will speak.  Also killed was the cameraman, Adam Ward.

The planting will be followed by a fundraiser at 3 pm at Taverna Cretekou, located at 818 King Street.  Del. Hurst will join us at the fundraiser as well.

VTV's advocacy agenda is to strengthen the background check system, with a particular focus on getting names into the system.  Details can be found at www.Campaign32.org.  More information about VTV can be found at www.vtvfamilyfoundation.org.

The VTV memorial tree grove planting event starts at 1 pm on Sunday, April 29, and will be in the upper rear portion of Chinquapin Park on King Street. Volunteers are needed to arrive at Noon and help with guiding people to the location within the property and helping with various tasks as they emerge, such as guiding people where to stand and helping coordinate with the people who show up and wish to help put trees in the ground. We also need people to staff a table and hold clipboards so people can register with their names and emails when they arrive. It would be helpful to have volunteers walk around and help if there are questions.

A maximum of five volunteers are accepted in advance of the event!
