Children support the fight against hunger by making sandwiches

We invite children between 6 and 12 years old to join our effort by making 75 peanut butter/jelly sandwiches.

Alexandria is one of the wealthiest parts of the United States, but an estimated 20% of Alexandrians can’t make ends meet. A report published in 2014 showed that 29,000 Alexandrians live near or below the official poverty threshold of $22,113 per year for a family with two adults and two children (2010). This means that many people can’t afford to put food on the table.

Volunteer Alexandria has pledged their time to support the fight against hunger and joined the local Great Harvest Bread Company and Megan Hurst with the support of Board Member Michelle McCoy, Jeff Peterson-Minuteman Press Alexandria and Whole Foods.

Children will prepare the sandwiches using gloves, assemble them, and package them in sandwich bags. Due to space, we ask that parents wait in the main area.

Volunteer Alexandria will be managing this project and instruct the children as well as talk about volunteerism, giving, and hunger. Bread donated by Great Harvest Bread.

Please note, this project involves working with nuts and wheat products!
