Youth Opportunities by Age Group

All ages: 

Help Pick up Litter Around the Burke Library --The Trash Trekkers will meet on Saturday, June 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. to pick up trash at the Burke Branch Library. Equipment will be provided.

Pick up Litter in a Kayak -- Collect litter along the streambank of Four Mile Run in a kayak with the 4-Mile Run Conservancy on Saturday, May 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. This project fills out quickly. Kayaks, paddles, life vests, bags, and other equipment will be provided.

Remove Invasive Species near Four Mile Run. The Friends of Mt. Vernon will meet on Saturday, May 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. to remove trash and vegetation along Four Mile Run. Equipment will be provided.

12 and older:

Volunteer with the Library. The City of Alexandria will host a Teen Volunteer Orientation, for anyone between the ages of 12 and 18, looking to help out their neighborhood library. The next orientation is Monday, June 9 or Saturday, June 14. Participants are required to submit an application before attending.

13 and older:

Distribute Groceries to Local Families -- Help UNCUT Youth distribute food to local families on Saturday, June 21 from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will sort, pack, and distribute groceries. Register online.

14 and older:

Pickup Bagels for a Purpose. Bagel Rescue, along with Volunteer Alexandria, is seeking volunteers to pick up surplus bagels from shops and bakeries and deliver them to nonprofits and food pantries. 

Volunteer at a Summer Camp. The Spitfire Club is an after-school club for girls that promotes reading, learning, and growing. Spitfire is recruiting staff and volunteer mentors for their summer camp between August 4 through 8. Training and a background check are required.

16 and older:

Help Refugee Youth Learn to Read this Summer. NOVA Raft is looking for tutors and chaperones for their summer camp between June 23 and August 8 for 2 hours every weekday or Saturday. Share your strengths in reading, math, or history with middle and high school students.

Volunteer at the Pride Fair -- Help vendors set-up tents, clean, and provide support at the Alexandria Pride Fair on Saturday, June 28, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Volunteers must be 16 years or older.
