Board Position with Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria Fair Trade Organization
Our store was opened in 1994 by a group of dedicated folks with a passion for our mission. We are more than just a store, we are a way for customers to shop their intention, shop their values, and connect with global villages. From communities throughout the world, our products are handmade using local materials (usually natural or recycled) and time-honored skills by makers we have known and worked with for years...even decades. The majority of our artisans are women. In our shop, you will discover organic clothing and jewelry, home decor and hand-knotted rugs, and specialty foods and beverages from over 45 countries. We do business differently, putting people and the planet first. You can trust your handmade purchase and donations directly impact the life and community of its maker, breaking the cycle of generational poverty and igniting social change.
Our Board Members must support the Ten Thousand Villages mission; attend one monthly board meeting; participate in at least one standing or ad-hoc board committee monthly; and participate in an annual day-long planning session. Board members must also be local to the greater Washington, DC area. Prior experience and expertise that we would find valuable include participation in other nonprofit boards; volunteer or employment experience with another nonprofit or another Ten Thousand Villages store; human resources management; accounting; legal; media and community outreach; and retail management. Board members serve a two-year term with a possibility of being reappointed for two additional terms.
Anyone who expresses an interest will be contacted directly with information on where to submit a resume and statement of interest.
