Website: https://www.campagnacenter.org/program/adults-new-neighbors/

Like to teach and work with all types of learners? Enjoy meeting people from other countries? Join New Neighbors' dedicated team of volunteer teachers to make a difference in not only your life, but an adult learner's life. We offer both in-person and online volunteer opportunities. Our opportunities include being a lead teacher, co-lead teacher, or a substitute teacher. It is not mandatory to have prior experience teaching ESL classes, as we offer teaching resources and a teaching curriculum. We just need someone who wants to give back to their community and our population of students who are so excited to learn English. *Please note: Volunteers should be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English.

We have two semesters, Fall (Aug-Dec) and Spring (Jan–May), during the academic year. Classes are held Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 am -11:30 am. I deally we would need teachers to remain for at least 1 semster. Our schedule of breaks follows ACPS' schedule. We offer 8 different levels to students. Students are placed according to their previous level scores or are given a placement test if new to our program. We also offer our students free citizenship classes and free job readiness training. Please sign up if you are interested in joining our incredible team!

If you would like to contact us to find out about next steps please email our Director, Jin Chong at jchong@campagnacenter.org, or Program Assistant, Lilly Najafzadeh at lnajafzadeh@campagnacenter.org

Some words from just one of our many wonderful and dedicated teachers, Ms. Knox (Level 3):

“Learning English is a first step for immigrants, for our newest Americans, toward becoming a real part of their neighborhood, to making friends, to helping their children through school, to getting a job. Some of our students are family mothers and homemakers who need to learn English before being able to venture out of their homes independently.

Volunteering with New Neighbors gives me the opportunity to help make that happen. In the process, I also meet amazing people from around the world and learn more about their cultures and traditions as I teach them about ours. As a New Neighbors English teacher, I’m helping people pursue their dreams and contribute to their new community.

In life, one person doesn’t have much opportunity to have an impact on world problems. However, this is a volunteer opportunity that makes me feel I do make a difference in how world problems affect individuals. My students have experienced war in Afghanistan, violence in Guatemala and Central America, strife in Ukraine, upheavals in East Africa. I can’t end those conflicts, but I can help my students become more independent in their new lives as Americans.

The New Neighbors curriculum guides the volunteer through the teaching materials, so previous experience in teaching English as a foreign language is not required. New Neighbors staff and the community of teachers are available as a resource to new volunteers.”
