Volunteerism is a powerful force for solving community problems, a creative use of human resources, and essential for a healthy, productive, and engaged society.

Community Resource for Volunteerism Volunteer Alexandria, founded in 1980, connects people to meaningful volunteer opportunities. We serve as a link between individual and group volunteers and area nonprofit organizations and events in the City of Alexandria.  We are the central resource for strengthening the community through volunteerism in Alexandria and care for the heart of Alexandria by mobilizing helping hands for those who need them most and providing volunteers with opportunity.  Our website and volunteer opportunity database are available 24 hours a day to help match potential volunteers to committed organizations making a difference. We are supporting over 500 nonprofit and City agencies by promoting their needs and recruiting volunteers.

In addition to information and referral resources, our programs include the Emergency Preparedness, Court Referred Community Service, RSVP-Northern Virginia, Youth Program, and Nonprofit Roundtables for Volunteer Engagement Professionals. Our signature event, the annual Business Philanthropy Summit and Spring for Alexandria’s Community Service Day attract hundreds of people to give back to the Alexandria community each year.

Alternative Community Service is a fee-based placement program for individuals required by courts to perform community service hours. Volunteer Alexandria's goals for the community service program are to provide nonprofits with volunteers; to place court-referred clients in community service setting for constructive completion of required hours; and to reduce expenses for government programs which would otherwise have to incorporate these individuals.

Business Connections is a program that enables Alexandria’s businesses and businesses visiting Alexandria to meet pressing needs in our communities while strengthening their own company by engaging their employees and customers in community service. Business Connections offer opportunities for employees and members to actively engage in community life, to participate in teambuilding projects and to gain expertise that increases skills, while aligning the company’s mission and goals with community service.  Volunteer Alexandria works with numerous nonprofit and municipal agencies in Alexandria to support people in need.

Disaster & Emergency Preparedness - Volunteer Alexandria is the lead agency in Alexandria for the recruitment and management of unaffiliated volunteers during an emergency. In collaboration with the City of Alexandria’s Office of Emergency Management and other volunteer centers and nonprofits within the National Capitol Region, Volunteer Alexandria continues to fulfill its mission by meeting the needs of the community by mobilizing people during emergency.

Youth and Family Volunteering Program promotes civic responsibility, increases, facilitates, and recognizes community service among young people in Alexandria through volunteerism. Our goal is that all children and youth, aged 6 to 21, thrive and are engaged in their community!

RSVP Northern Virginia - 55 & Greater serves residents 55 and older who are interested in making an impact. There are many ways to be involved in the community. Volunteer, attend the Speaker Series, or become a RSVP Northern VA volunteer.

Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria is an annual event recognizing volunteers nominated by the community for their outstanding service to their fellow Alexandrians. This evening event is the perfect setting to enjoy fantastic company, food, and libations while honoring exceptional volunteers.

Community Toy Drive takes place in partnership with the City of Alexandria’s Fund for Alexandria’s Child and invites the community to help collect toys, games and books for families in need. Businesses, congregations, condominium and apartment buildings, schools, DASH Bus, and individuals organize holiday parties, toy collections, and ask friends, family members, and customers to pitch in. After collection is complete, thousands of toys are sorted into age categories and counted in preparation for the big day. Volunteer “shopping assistants” aide parents and guardians to select gifts for each child in their family, while little ones are entertained with craft projects. The spirit of the holiday season is clearly evident during this annual event. Interested in being a collection site? Old Town Arts & Crafts Fair takes place annual and attracts thousands of people to shop and browse from the 80+- vendors who set up their booth in the Waterfront Park in June. Interested in being a vendor? Email us.
