CANCELED Children fight hunger by making sandwiches!

A decision was just made to cancel the March 21 and April project due to COVID-19 (coronavirus). Please stay tuned for an update for May and June projects.

We invite children between 8 and 12 years old to prepare peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. The sandwiches will then be donated to a local school.

Children, using gloves, will prepare the sandwiches, assemble, and individually package them. Children should wear their hair pulled back and under a baseball cap or other full hair covering such as a bandana/scarf or hairnet. They should wear clothing they don't mind if it gets dirty. Due to space constraints, we ask that parents wait in the sitting area. Volunteer Alexandria manages this project and guides the children as well as leads a discussion on volunteerism, giving and hunger.

To register multiple youth, please click "Sign up with a team" below.

Please note, this project involves working with peanut and wheat products in an environment that prepares food with milk, eggs, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, wheat & other cereal grains. Children with allergies and/or sensitivities to these products should discuss risks of exposure with their physicians before participating.

About Hunger in Alexandria: Alexandria is one of the wealthiest parts of the United States, but an estimated 20% of Alexandrians can’t make ends meet. A report published in 2014 showed that 29,000 Alexandrians live near or below the official poverty threshold of $22,113 per year for a family with two adults and two children (2010). This means that many people can’t afford to put food on the table. Volunteer Alexandria has pledged their time to support the fight against hunger and joined the local Great Harvest Bread Company and Megan Hurst. Bread & space donated by Great Harvest Bread.
