MLK Day Monday, Jan. 20 – a day on, not a day off

Our nation observes it on the third Monday of January, which is January 20, 2025. Each year, the MLK Day of Service inspires hundreds of thousands of Americans to come together to serve their community. Citizens across the nation do a variety of projects and activities to improve their communities, serve, and commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Follow this page to keep up with the latest projects and activities for the weekend.


Friends of Mt. Vernon Trail - National Landing Vegetation Removal: Friends of Mount Vernon is inviting volunteers to remove invasive vegetation growing into the trail from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 18. All ages are welcome. Equipment will be provided.

Clean-Up Litter along Four Mile Run -- Collect litter along the trails and streambank at lower Four Mile Run Park on Saturday, February 1 with the Four Mile Run Conservancy from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 19 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

MLK Day Month of Service Supply Drive: The United Way is collecting school supplies (e.g. notebooks, folders, pens, highlighters) that will be distributed to students and teachers across the region.

Make Blankets, Care Kits, or Make Meaningful Visits with Shiloh Church: Create blankets for the Northern VA Juvenile Detention Center or prepare hygiene kits for a local shelter with Shiloh Baptist Church from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 20. Shiloh will also plan visits to nursing homes, juvenile detention centers, and shelters. Breakfast will be served.

Attend a Volunteer Fair: Volunteer Arlington is hosting a volunteer fair on Saturday, January 18 at Washington-Lee High School, starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at noon. They also plan to have different activities and projects that benefit local nonprofits. Advanced registration is required.

Attend the City of Alexandria's MLK Program: The City of Alexandria is hosting a citywide celebration and reception on Monday, January 20 at the George Washington Masonic Temple, with a reception from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and a program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This year's theme is "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy," and will feature food, music, and a panel discussing Dr. King's life and message.

Learn and Take Action with Little Free Library: Engage in educational activities and take community action on your own time near Little Free Library book-sharing boxes, with a chance to win free books by submitting an impact form.
